Sheriff Barnes has over forty (40) years of law enforcement experience, with twenty-four (24) years as Sheriff of Guilford County. Sheriff Barnes began his work in law enforcement with the same office to which he is now Sheriff.

Sheriff Barnes served as a Deputy Sheriff for ten (10) years with the same department of which he is now Sheriff. His experience in law enforcement also includes serving for five (5) years as a Senior Fraud Investigator/Bank Officer with what is now known as Bank of America. He served for four (4) years as Special Assistant to the Director of Transportation, and as Law Enforcement Liaison for the State of North Carolina on the North Carolina Drug Cabinet.

The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office has over 650 employees and a budget of $63,000,000.00. The Sheriff is responsible for 652 square miles and over 500,000 citizens. Under Sheriff Barnes, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office has experienced a 65% reduction in crime, according to the State Bureau of Investigation Crime Report.

Unlike any other county in North Carolina, the Sheriff’s Office is responsible for two jails and two court systems in two metro areas. Sheriff Barnes states, “It is a job that has been my lifelong dream.” I can best describe myself as being “a hands on” Sheriff. “I feel there is no more honorable profession in the world than Law Enforcement. “

During his tenure, the Sheriff’s Office has realized a 65% reduction in crime, while other jurisdictions around Guilford County have realized only half that much. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office has been recognized as a leader in the law enforcement community by the Governor’s Crime Commission, the National Association of County Organizations, as well as other professional organizations across the nation.
