Animal Cruelty

Sheriff BJ Barnes reports the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office is continuing the investigation in a case of animal cruelty.

The Sheriff’s Office was notified after a viral video surfaced of two teenagers using an aerosol can and lighter to ignite a flame towards a dog.

The Sheriff’s Office immediately initiated an investigation and that investigation is still ongoing.

The detective assigned to the case is still conducting interviews and will discuss his findings with the District Attorney’s Office at the appropriate time.

Information regarding the individuals involved, as well as any court dispositions, cannot be publically released because of the ages of the offenders. Any charges that may be brought forth will be handled in juvenile court due to the age of the offenders involved.

Animal Services was promptly notified and responded to the location of the offense and provided medical treatment to the injured animal. The dog has currently been placed with a rescue organization and has not been adopted out, nor is it available for adoption at this time.

Animal Services has been working collaboratively with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office during the investigation.

The investigating officer will be working closely with the court system to determine what charges will be filed. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office takes all allegations of animal cruelty seriously and conducts thorough investigations as to all reports of injury and cruelty towards animals.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the Guilford County Sheriff’s District 3 Office at (336) 641-6691.
